TAOP Level 4.
Part 1. The Frame.
Frame shapes and sizes.
I hope I can demonstrate my past use of employing different shapes and axes with these three photographs.
The first is a shot of Brighton Pier taken early in the morning into the glow of the not yet risen sun. The linear shape of the wrecked pier lends itself to a wide picture. I could have brought it down lower but I think the birds flying through the top of the shot give a feeling of hope. Here the thirds rule have been obeyed both horizontally and vertically. The two dark masses, which are the two halves of the pier, and the sky and beach all make for a nice balance.
The second is one of Lincoln Cathedral that I took from the steps of the hotel opposite. The height of the structure really demanded the treatment I gave it. I had not looked at this shot using the balance and framing terms referred to in this course. I think it is a balanced picture but that balance is supplied as much by the trees on each side as by the centre placement of the main subject. The statue also makes a neat lead into the picture. I couldn’t have wished for a better sky.
The third is of a resident in sheltered accommodation who was attending a basis computer class. I took the shot in an horizontal axis which, after cropping, ended up as you see it. I didn’t take the shot with a square format in mind but the balance of the shot let to this result.
